Ashanti Priest Mask
This mask was made from Osese wood and brass by Native Ghanaian artist Sam T.
What do we think? This is a particularly interesting mask due to its symbolism. The Gye Nyame symbol (which translated into English from Twi means “except for God”) on the priest’s head shows us that serving God is his primary thought. The giraffes depicted on the priest’s chest could suggest that the physical world isn’t as important to him as the spiritual.
